AI in Workplace Safety: Practical Uses That Hold Up in an Audit
Artificial intelligence is showing up in safety programs across manufacturing. Used well, it can help spot hazards earlier and focus attention where risk is highest. Used poorly, it creates new risks, distrust among workers, and records no auditor can follow.
Practical Uses
- Computer vision: cameras and software that detect missing PPE, people entering exclusion zones, or forklift and pedestrian near-misses.
- Near-miss and incident analytics: analyzing reports, inspection findings, and maintenance data to find patterns people miss, such as recurring issues on a specific shift or line.
- Wearables: sensors that track heat stress, fatigue, lifting posture, or gas exposure.
- Document assistance: tools that help draft job hazard analyses or summarize incident reports, with human review.
What Makes an AI Tool Hold Up in an Audit
An auditor will not evaluate the algorithm. They will evaluate whether your management system controls it. That means:
- Defined purpose: which hazard or risk does the tool address, and how does it fit into your risk assessment?
- Management of change: introducing the tool changes how work is monitored. ISO 45001 clause 8.1.3 requires changes to be planned and assessed for new hazards.
- Worker consultation: monitoring technology affects workers directly. ISO 45001 clause 5.4 requires consultation and participation.
- Human decisions: AI should flag risks for people to act on, not replace judgment on safety-critical decisions.
- Records: alerts, responses, and corrective actions must be traceable.
Privacy and Legal Considerations
Video monitoring and wearables collect personal data. Some state laws, such as Illinois' Biometric Information Privacy Act, regulate biometric data specifically. Review legal requirements before deployment and tell employees what is collected and why.
Start Small
Pick one high-risk problem, such as forklift and pedestrian interaction, and pilot a tool with clear success measures. Measure results against your baseline before expanding.
