What a Physical Security Assessment Covers (and When You Need One)

September 26, 20266 min read

A physical security assessment is an objective evaluation of how well a facility protects its people, assets, and information against threats. For manufacturers, it connects security to safety, operations, and regulatory obligations.

What It Covers

  • Threat and vulnerability review: what could realistically happen at this site, and what makes it possible.
  • Perimeter: fencing, gates, lighting, and vehicle access.
  • Access control: badges, readers, keys, visitor and contractor management, and restricted areas.
  • Surveillance and detection: cameras, alarms, intrusion detection, and who monitors them.
  • Procedures: security policies, response plans, shipping and receiving, and incident reporting.
  • People: training, awareness, and how security rules are followed in practice.
  • Information: protection of sensitive documents, technical data, and control systems.

How It Is Done

A good assessment combines document review, observation at different times and shifts, testing of controls, and interviews with employees and security personnel. Findings should be ranked by risk so the facility knows what to fix first.

Signs You Need One Now

  • Repeated security violations or incidents
  • Theft, sabotage, or unexplained damage
  • A new contract that involves export-controlled data or defense work
  • Facility expansion, new buildings, or new processes
  • A customer or regulator asking about your security program
  • No assessment in the last several years

After the Assessment

A report alone does not improve security. The findings need owners, corrective actions, and follow-up to confirm the risk actually went down.
