Can AI Help You Stay ISO 45001 Compliant? Risks and Requirements

September 26, 20266 min read

Companies implementing ISO 45001 increasingly ask whether AI can help them get there faster. The short answer: AI can support the system, but it does not satisfy any requirement by itself, and it brings requirements of its own.

Where AI Can Support ISO 45001

  • Monitoring and measurement (9.1): analyzing leading indicators such as near-misses, inspections, and observations.
  • Hazard identification (6.1.2): surfacing patterns in incident and maintenance data.
  • Incident investigation (10.2): organizing evidence and highlighting similar past events.
  • Documented information (7.5): helping keep procedures and records organized.

Where AI Creates New Obligations

  • New hazards: over-reliance on automated alerts, false negatives, and psychosocial stress from constant monitoring must be considered in hazard identification.
  • Management of change (8.1.3): deploying an AI tool is a change to how work is done and monitored.
  • Consultation and participation (5.4): workers must be involved in decisions that affect their health and safety, including new monitoring technologies.
  • Competence (7.2): the people who use and act on AI outputs must understand the tool's limits.
  • Procurement (8.1.4): buying an AI system is a procurement decision that must consider health and safety.

ISO/IEC 42001

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the management system standard for artificial intelligence. Organizations that develop or rely heavily on AI may use it to govern AI risk. It follows the same Harmonized Structure as ISO 45001, so the two can be integrated. For most manufacturers using AI tools in safety, the ISO 45001 controls above are the starting point.

The Bottom Line

AI should strengthen a working management system, not substitute for one. Build the ISO 45001 foundation first, then introduce AI where it solves a defined problem, with the controls the standard already requires.

How Compliance Fortress Solves This: The Exceleor Path

  1. Discovery: understand the problem, measure where things stand today, and agree on what success looks like.
  2. Define the engagement path: most organizations don't know the path. We do. A proven method, tailored to your situation.
  3. Training: bring your people to a clear understanding of the requirements.
  4. Implement and engage: carry out the work jointly, with your people involved from day one.
  5. Verify: confirm the work was done and meets the requirement.
  6. Validate: confirm the original problem is actually solved, measured against the success measures from Discovery.
